Bienvenue, Sandra, welcome to the group, Yes, we all find that often the women used many different last names. In the records for some of my ancestors in Zacatecas I find that a different last name for the mother was used almost for each child's baptism. This is because women used their mother's maiden names as well as their own, or they used their step-mother's maiden names if they had been raised by the step-mother. One time I found that they had entered the grandmother's name instead of the mother's. This may have happened because the mother and father stayed home and it was the padrinos who took the baby to be baptized and they didn't know the correct names. I have also found where men used their mother's maiden names instead of their father's last names. That could be because it was thought to be better to use the name of the espanoles (or rich grandparents) instead of the real father's name. My father was born in Jerez. His last name was Olague Tinajero…

The RSVP deadline (the 15th) is looming for the first Southern California Ranchos Meeting. You still have an opportunity to respond-- and please do so. I want the meeting to be a great success. Some had responded months ago stating that they would like to attend, but I haven't heard from them since. Maybe you never mentioned that you would like to attend, but now you realize that February 25th is doable. Whatever your situation, please let me know at lareina2@... or rosalindamruiz@... if you plan to attend, so I can send you information and we can order food for you. As you know, the more people who come, the merrier, and I would love to meet you. Please don't be shy! As a reminder: February 25, 2006 11:30 a.m. Rowland Heights, CA Thanks, Rosalinda

Linda, I saw that show the other evening, too. My husband watched too, and he was amazed. It was especially interesting to me, since I am discovering just how many mulato lines I have on my father's side from Zacatecas. It should be interesting to whites too to find out that they may have as much as 11% African blood as that genetecist found out (and his mother told him to stop talking about it-he looked nothing but white), and that someone like the professor that narrated the show had 50% white blood even though anyone looking at him would say he was black. When Oprah saw the documents for her black slave ancestors and she cried, I cried too. It was interesting too that blacks had Asian blood too. My father's Spanish ancestors, the Olagues and Tinajeros (Felix/Suriano) were all mulatos by the mid and late 1700's. I really want to send for those DNA kits now, Emilie Garcia Port Orchard, WA --- ----- Original Message ----- From: Erlinda Castanon-Long …

The public service chanel here in Everett, Chanel 9 has a show on the genealogy search for Blacks to find thier genetic makeup. Since I have traced 3 Mulato lines in 3 different states, Jalisco, Zacatecas and Michoacan I was very interested in what they had to say. They shared the fact that the Portuguese controlled the slave trade and that in the time frame I'm looking at, mid 1600's the odds are the slaves were from Angola. They shared the major advancments they are making daily in genetic testing now being able to isolate genes to find what percentages we are of different ethnic backgrounds. I find this all very exciting and hope if you get the chance that you will get to watch this very informative show. Even if you have no black ancestors the sharing of genetic information and genealogy research methods is great and well worth watching. Linda in Everett

Joseph, Here is another ancestor of mine. I had trouble finding him because by the 1700s they were spelling it Marcelino Suriano and his descendants had turned into mulatos in Salitrillo. I remember that when I tried to get some records from Seville, they would only send it to me if I had a fax machine. I don't have one, but that would have been neat to get them that way and not wait so long for the snail-mail. yes you will find the same information on the AER and very very very much more below is a pinch of what will be found on the AER joseph Emilie Garcia wrote: Joseph, Below is a copy of what I found today on one of my ancestors in Ancestry.com. The original entry in Ancestry.com that I printed out back in August 2004 said "Extracted from documents in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, copies of which are among the holdings of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City". Now I notice that this entry has that sentence truncated after "copies of". I wonder why they did that? Did they not want the public to know that the FHC has those records, or did the FHC make them eliminate that part? They only give some book as a resource. That time that I tried to navigate the AER online, I got as far as getting a password and I pulled up any old record, and it was amazing! The actual photo of the document from the 1500s appeared on the screen and it had al…

not sure, i don’t think so. yes joining that list is so user unfriendly. . .you’ll just have to fiddle with the instructions until you get it. sorry but it is hard to finally get subscribed. in fact if I had to subscribe today I’d have to read the instructions myself. . .I don’t remember how I did it. joseph Emilie Garcia wrote: Joseph, Are these the same archives that are in Ancestry.com?
